Obituary for John "Jack" Whalen
John W. “Jack” Whalen 79 was called back into God’s care on Thursday July 20, 2006, with his loving family at his side. Born in Springfield the son of the late Francis and Margaret (McDonnell) Whalen, he lived in Springfield most of his life and retired after 35 years with the Rexnord Company. John was a long time coach and past President of the Blunt Park Athletic Assoc. as well as a member of the I.O. Council of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his loving children; John Whalen and his wife Donna of Great Barrington, James Whalen and his wife Cheryl of Springfield, Joseph Whalen and his fiancée Kathryn Kudelski of South Hadley, Margaret Bernard and her husband James of Ludlow and Maryellen Dasso and her husband Louis of Holyoke; 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Ellen (Tower) Whalen and a brother Francis. Funeral services will be Monday morning at 9 AM from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church at 10, followed by burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Visiting hours are Sunday from 3-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Tribute Program, one Harvard St. Brookline, Ma. 02146-9795.
