Obituary for John Martins
John Martins, 70, of Ludlow was peacefully called home to be with God on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Ribafria, Portugal on March 28, 1951, son of the late Joaquim and Leonor (Costa) Martins. He immigrated to Montreal in 1960 then to the United States in 1976. John worked for the United States Postal Service retiring in 2009 and was the owner of Martins Photo / Video where he captured beautiful memories of weddings, first communions, graduations, and other significant life events. He was a passionate fan of the Montreal Canadiens and an avid runner, participating in over 20 marathons in the United States, Canada, and Portugal. John always said “Everyday is a beautiful day” and his greatest moments in life were spent laughing and joking with his family and caring for his grandchildren. He was known for saying how proud he was of his daughters and grandchildren, he would attend all their sporting and school events. He leaves his loving daughters and sons-in-law, whom he loved as sons: Sylvie Casares and her husband Marcos and Valerie Messina and her husband Peter, all of Ludlow. He will be dearly missed by his adored grandchildren: Christien, Nathan, Owen, Ryan and Kaitlyn; his loving companion Idalia Emiterio; caring brothers and sisters: São Martins, Tozé Martins and wife Irene, Teresa Baptista and husband Victor, sister-in-law Ligia and sadly predeceased by his brother Victor Martins and late brother-in-law Jorge Silva; nieces and nephews: Sandy, Helder, Nancy, Kathy, Cristina, Catarina, Jennifer, and Michael. John also leaves his former wife Marianne. In John’s words, “A friend is a gift that you give yourself” and he leaves many cousins and extended family members, and friends in United States, Montreal, and Portugal. John was well known for making friends everywhere he went, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand, and motivating other to “Just to do it!” Funeral services for John will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from the Ludlow Funeral Home. A Public walk-thru visitation will be held from 9:00-10:30 at the Funeral Home, observing social distancing and non-contact with his family. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am in Christ the King Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s name to Alzheimer's Association @ www.alz.org
