Obituary for John R. DaSilva
John R. DaSilva, 67, of Ludlow, MA and Vero Beach, FL, gone too soon passed away peacefully at home in the love, care, and comfort of his family on Sunday, July 3, 2022. He was the son of the late Manuel R. and Arminda “MiMi”(Mendes) DaSilva. He was a 1973 graduate of Ludlow High School. John attended Quincy Junior College and graduated with honors, earning an Associate’s Degree in Science and his Bachelor’s Degree of Business Administration from Anna Maria College graduating cum laude. John was very proud of his military career, serving his country for 33 years, 29 and a half of them on active duty in the United States Air Force. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, and in his last eight months of service was Acting Command Chief Master Sergeant of the 104th Fighter Wing. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, The Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 7 devices, and multiple other awards and medals. He retired in 2007 at the age of 51. John was a man of honor and integrity. He was always helping others out without being asked and volunteering his time. He volunteered for several years with the Ludlow Baseball Association (LBA). He was a founding member of the LBA, director of registrations, try-outs, and team rosters. He was also a coach for many years in the St. Mary’s organization, LBA, Tri-Town, NEYSA, the Belchertown Fall League, and a director and coach of the 13-16 age group at Langley Air Force Base in 2002. He was a member of the Western Mass Relics Senior Softball League. John coached, was registrar, treasurer, and did field maintenance. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth’s Parish and former member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Parish. He was a member of the Ludlow Fish and Game Club. John also helped out with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Deborah (Knight) DaSilva; his proud sons: Brian DaSilva, his wife Jennifer, and grandsons Luke and Henry, of Dallas, TX, and Michael DaSilva, his wife Kathryn, grandson Nolan, and granddaughter Emily, of Dedham, MA. His brothers, Joseph, wife Barbara; and Manuel, wife Cher; brother-in-law, Richard P. Knight, wife Rena; Father-in-law, Richard F. Knight; Aunt, Beatrice Jorge; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and several godchildren. Funeral services for John will be held on Tuesday July 12, 2022. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at St. Elizabeth Parish, 181 Hubbard Street Ludlow, for an 11:00am Liturgy of Christian Mass, followed by burial with Military Honors at 1:00pm at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Special thanks to the staff at the D’Amour Cancer Center, the Oncology floor, BMC nurses, Emily and Debbie, and Baystate Hospice. Special thanks to friends Bill and Linda, John D, Pat, and Jack.
