Obituary for João Goncalves
João Goncalves, 87, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Penedones, Portugal, he was the son of the late Pedro Goncalves and Ana Maria Mendes Marques. He resided in Portugal with his family before moving to France and eventually settling in the United States, working hard in all 3 countries to provide for his family. João worked for many years at Jahn Foundry from where he retired, and within the Ludlow community, he was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and proud member of the Gremio Lusitano Club. He enjoyed walking, gardening, and was a self-taught handyman who used his special talent to resolve any issue that arose within his household; but above all, João will be remembered for his devotion to his family.
João was the beloved husband of Ana Goncalves; a loving father to Jose Manuel Goncalves and wife Alzira, Miguel Goncalves and wife Shannon, and Christina M. Deslauriers and husband Drew; a cherished grandfather of Nicholas, Marcus, and Viviana Goncalves, and Mya Deslauriers; a dear brother to the late Bento Mendes Goncalves, Ana Goncalves Pires, and Joaquina Goncalves; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends.
Funeral services celebrating João’s life will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Mass at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Parish, followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00pm at the funeral home and in lieu of flowers it was the wish of João’s family that donations be made in his memory to: Alzheimer's Association at Alz.org.
