Obituary for Jose Afonso Alves
Jose Afonso Alves, 61, of Ludlow, passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2023. Born in Vilar de Porro, Tras-os-Montes, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria (Morais) Alves. As a child, Joe immigrated to Ludlow with his family where he graduated from Ludlow High School in 1980 and worked for over 16 years as a custodian for the Ludlow Public Schools. He was a Benfica enthusiast and a soccer player for many years, a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, and enjoyed hunting with his canine companions, Rambo and Charlie. Joe was the devoted husband of 35 years to Rosa (Dias) Alves; a loving father to Joshua Alves and Jeffrey Alves (Jenna); a dear brother to Aida Sanches and husband Aires; cherished son-in-law to Maria Dias and late husband Joao; and also leaves his brother-in-law Antonio Dias and wife Maria; niece and Goddaughter Christina; nephews and Godsons Joe Sanchez and Jared Dias, nephews Justin, Jacob, and James, and great nephews. He also leaves several aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends. Family and friends are asked to gather for a Liturgy of Christian Burial to be held on Thursday, October 19th in Our Lady of Fatima Parish at 10:00am. There will be no visiting hours, and additional funeral services will be held privately by his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
