Obituary for Jose Alves Dias

Eternal rest grant unto Jose, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Jose Alves Dias, 92, of Ludlow, MA, passed away on November 5, 2023 after several health complications.

Jose was born on August 5, 1931. He immigrated to the United States with his wife and his two young sons in 1967 and made Ludlow his home. He worked hard at tough jobs to provide for his family. Complaining wasn’t a thing for Jose. He was a quiet, kind man who will be missed by all those who loved him.

His Catholic faith was very important to him, and he lived the teachings of the Church during his pilgrimage here on earth. He was a lifelong communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and attended Holy Mass until the last few weeks of his life.

Jose loved to make folar (Portuguese meat bread) and was really good at it; they were always delicious. Among his many talents was gardening, which always produced an abundance of goodies to share with neighbors and friends. Puzzle making was another of his favorite pastimes, especially after retirement.

Jose was predeceased by his wife Estela, his son Atty. Joao M. V. Dias, and his sister Carmina (Dias) Fernandes. He is survived by his son Joe, daughter-in-law Anna Maria, grandchildren Samantha, Joseph (Francesca), and Michaela Dias and Andrea and Marc Dias. He also leaves behind 3 great-grandchildren to continue his legacy: Joseph Jr., Jordan, and Catherine Dias.

He also leaves his nieces: Isabel and Atty. Carmina Fernandes, Nancy Swol, Dr. Patricia Veiga and Pauline Guenther, and Diana Veiga as well as his nephews: John, Domingos, Joe and Peter Fernandes, James and Jack Nascimento Jr., and Victor and Joe Veiga. Among those who will miss him are his many godchildren, especially Carmina Silva.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at Baystate Medical Center for providing him with great care in his final days. We are especially grateful to Nurse Kate for the loving care and compassion she showed to him as well as our family at a very difficult time. We would also like to thank his kind neighbor Antonio Rodrigues who was always there to help him over the years and was a true blessing to Jose.

There are no calling hours. A Rite of Christian Burial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Parish at 438 Windsor St. in Ludlow, MA on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at the Church at 12:00pm for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Fatima Parish.
