Obituary for Jose Arsenio Costa
Jose Arsenio Costa, 86, of Ludlow, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Peniche, Portugal on February 26, 1939, Jose carried with him the warmth, resilience, and traditions of his homeland throughout his life.
Jose was predeceased by his beloved parents, Zeia Conceicao and Arsenio Costa of Portugal, as well as his siblings Mariana Costa, Luis Costa (wife Olimpia), and Joao Costa. Their memories remained close to his heart and were often shared through stories that reflected his deep love for family and heritage.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Margarida Costa, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. Jose was a proud father to his sons, Nelson Costa and his wife Lori of Sudbury, MA, and Victor Costa and his wife Sara of Longmeadow, MA. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren—Margot and Hallie Costa of Sudbury, and Emilia and Avi Costa of Longmeadow—who brought light and laughter into his days.
Jose is also survived by his brothers Joaquim Costa (late Dulce) and Goncalo Costa (late Gloria) of Ludlow, MA, and by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart and life.
A passionate soccer fan, Jose found great joy in watching matches and cheering for his favorite team, S.L. Benfica. He also took pride in crafting homemade wine, tending to his garden, and perfecting the care of his lawn—activities that reflected his dedication, skill, and love for the comforts of home.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to family, and gentle spirit. Whether sharing a meal, offering a word of wisdom, or simply enjoying time with loved ones, Jose lived with grace and humility. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to gather for a funeral mass in Jose’s honor on Thursday, July 31 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow, Massachusetts followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jose’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow, MA.
