Jose Afonso, aged 87, peacefully departed from this world on September 25, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in the town of Firvidas, Montalegre, Portugal to his parents Antonio and Ana Afonso. On February 3, 1956, Jose married the love of his life, the late Maria Goncalves Afonso, and settled in Travassos da Cha, Montalegre, Portugal where they started their family having four children: daughters Fatima and Benta, and sons Antonio and Avelino. Jose immigrated to the United States in 1970 where he worked the majority of his career as a machine operator at American Saw and Manufacturing Company, from where he retired in 1998. He was an active and faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, a member of the Adoration Society of the Christ of King Church, and a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club. Jose was an avid soccer fan who loved watching his favorite team, Benfica, playing on the t.v., or listening to the games on the radio. A devout family man, his greatest joy was spending time with his family whom he loved very much. Jose was the beloved husband of 40 years to the late Maria Goncalves Afonso, whom he adored. Jose is survived by his loving daughters Fatima Santos and her husband Amadeu, Benta Alves and her husband Joe, and his two sons Antonio Afonso, and Avelino Afonso and his wife Cristina; all residing in Ludlow. His memory will forever be cherished by his grandchildren: Michelle Santos, Daniel Santos, Jason Alves and his wife Jaqueline, Leana Gendreau and her husband Chris, Justin Afonso and his wife Nicole, Joshua Afonso and his husband Tyler, Joseph Afonso, Luke Afonso, and Audrey Afonso. Additionally, he leaves behind his beloved great- grandchildren: Alexis, Jason, Devon, Kiara, Indy, Andre, Dominic and Lincoln. He also leaves behind his sisters: Luisa Delgado and Maria Rosa Chaves, both of Portugal; cherished nephews, nieces, godchildren, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who will remember him fondly. He was predeceased by his brothers Domingos Afonso and Antonio Afonso. Jose’s family was his greatest joy in life, and he selflessly dedicated himself to their care and well-being. In memory of Jose Afonso, may his love, kindness, and devotion to family live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
