Obituary for Jose Castro

It is with a profound sense of loss and admiration that we announce the passing of Jose Alves Castro, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Jose left us peacefully at his son's home in Ludlow, Massachusetts, succumbing to heart failure, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family .Born in Sabuzedo, Montalegre, Portugal, the son of Jose Afonso de Castro & Maria do Carmo Alves Castro, Jose's life was a testament to resilience and the pursuit of freedom. His early years were marked by service in the Portuguese army during the 1960s. It was a time of political turmoil, and during the Salazar dictatorship, Jose demonstrated his courage and compassion by aiding others in their escape to France, despite the risk of his own imprisonment. His bravery during those times has been an inspiration to all who knew of his deeds.

In search of a better life and the opportunities that America promises to those who reach its shores, Jose immigrated to the United States with his beloved wife, Maria Rodrigues Castro, and their young son, Jose Rodrigues Castro in 1974. The family's journey and their subsequent success are a true embodiment of the American dream. His commitment to providing for his family was unwavering, as was his dedication to his work at Jann Foundry & Hillcrest Orchards, where he was a valued employee for many years. Jose was a strong willed man focused on his family. He was devoted to Maria, his wife of 56 years. Never did you see one without the other! Jose instilled in his son the importance of a man's word, and honor to his family name. "Eu Sabuzedo" or "Ze De Rita" was known as a man who upheld his family name with grace but his greatest accomplishment was his incredible bond with his son. No father & son could have been closer, and no father could have been more proud of his dedicated son.

For over half a century, he was a faithful servant to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts. His service was not merely an obligation but a reflection of his deep faith. As a man who was not able to pursue education due to his responsibility to provide for his family at a young age, he felt deep pride for his son & grandchildren's educational accomplishments. Their achievements reflected the fulfillment of that goal when coming to America to provide a better life for his son, and eventually his son's own children.

Jose leaves behind a family that adores him & friends who respect him. Jose is survived by his devoted wife, Maria Rodrigues Castro, his son, Jose Rodrigues Castro & his wife, Melissa Kennedy Burke Castro, and his beloved grandchildren, Alexander Richard Jose Castro and Katherine Teresa Castro. His passing is not only a loss to his family but to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Jose Castro's story is a reminder that a life well-lived is not measured in years but in the love shared and the lives impacted. He will be profoundly missed. Funeral services for Jose will be held on Wednesday, June 26th at 8:45 from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 AM in Immaculate Conception Church followed by burial in Saint Aloysius Cemetery.    Visiting hours at the funeral home for Jose will be held Tuesday evening June 25 from 5 to 7 PM
