Obituary for Jose Pereira Fonseca
Jose (Joe) Pereira Fonseca, 76 of Ludlow, passed away at home on September 20, 2020. Born in Moleanos, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose and Emilia (Pereira) Fonseca. In Portugal, Joe served in the Portuguese army and was in active duty in the Overseas War. Joe immigrated to the United States where he met the love of his life, Saudade (Ramos). They married in 1972 and settled in Ludlow. Joe was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church and a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club for many years. Joe was an extremely hard-working, selfless individual who put his love for family above all. He built his business, Ludlow Cutter Grinding Company, from the ground up and was very well-known for his unique mechanical abilities in solving just about any complex problem presented to him.
In his spare time, Joe enjoyed taking long walks and gardening with his wife. He liked tinkering with things, and could fix almost anything. Joe loved traveling to visit his daughter and son-in-law in London, taking trips to Portugal where he'd help organize large family reunions, and helping his son win at cornhole during Sunday Fundays. Joe wore a constant smile, and was well-known for his silly jokes and boisterous laugh, all of which will be missed by many.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife Saudade and sister Maria of Moleanos, Portugal. He was a loving father to his son David and wife Stacey of Agawam, and his daughter Elizabeth and husband James of London, UK. Joe was a very proud Vô to his granddaughter Jocelyn, and never missed any of her activities or theater performances. Joe was predeceased by his brothers Manuel and Joao of Portugal. He also leaves a large and loving extended family and many lifelong friends in the United States and Portugal.
Walk-through, no-contact visiting hours for Joe will be Monday, September 28, 2020 from 9 a.m – 10:15 a.m. at Ludlow Funeral Home. His funeral mass and burial will be held privately by his family. In Joe’s honor, the family requests you plant a flower, be kind to others, crack a joke or laugh out loud, just the way he always would. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ludlow Boys and Girls Club, 91 Claudias Way, Ludlow, MA.
