Obituary for Lucia Fernandes
Lucia Fernandes, aged 85, peacefully departed from this world at her home in Ludlow on July 29th, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in the town of Travassos da Cha, Portugal, to her parents, Dionisio and Ana Goncalves. She immigrated to the United States in 1966 alongside her family and settled in Ludlow. Lucia worked for many years in the textile industry, ultimately retiring from Unifirst Corporation. She was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. Upon retiring, Lucia found immense joy in spending summers with her beloved husband in their cherished village of Travassos. In 2019, she experienced the heart-wrenching loss of her husband, Manuel, with whom she had shared 62 wonderful years. Their love was a testament to the beauty of a lifelong partnership. Lucia is survived by her loving daughters: Senhorinha Dias and her husband Armenio of Belchertown, Anna Maria Bernard and her husband Jeff of Harwich, MA, and Ilda Panetta and her partner Ron LaRocque of Belchertown. Her memory will forever be cherished by her grandchildren: Jessica, Eric & his wife Samantha, Katie, Michael & his fiancée Netaya, Stephen and his wife Rachael, Kimberly, and Juliana. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved great- grandchildren: Arya, George, Milo, Brayden & Teddy. She leaves behind her sisters: Teresa Carneiro of Portugal, Maria Fontoura of Ludlow and Rosa Fontoura and her husband Ilidio of Ludlow and her brother Antonio Meireles and his wife Lourdes of Brazil. and her sister in law Ana Goncalves and her husband Avelino of Ludlow. She was predeceased by her brothers Alexander and Lavalier Goncalves and her sisters Lucinda Alves and Laurinda Justo. She also leaves behind cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who will remember her fondly. Lucia’s family was her greatest joy in life, and she dedicated herself to their care and well-being. The loss of her beloved husband left an everlasting void in her heart, from which she never fully recovered. However, it brings comfort to know that they are finally reunited. In memory of Lucia Fernandes, may her love, kindness, and devotion to family live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Funeral services for Lucia will be held on Friday, August 4th at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Mass celebrated at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Parish followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday evening, August 3rd from 5:00-7:0pm at the Funeral Home.
