Obituary for Luiz Varao
Luiz Varao, 92, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at home on June 30, 2022 with his loving family by his side. Born in Ludlow, Luiz (known to most as Louie) was the son of the late Manuel and Joaquina (Pecedonio) Varao. He was a lifelong resident and 1948 graduate of Ludlow High School. After high school, Luiz joined the Marines during which time he was in an Elvis Presley movie and roommates with Morey Amsterdam of the Dick Van Dyke tv show-one of his favorites. He subsequently served in the National Guard.
For 37 years, Luiz worked at Monsanto, and he was fortunate to be able to spend just as many years in retirement, during which he was an avid golfer and a long-standing member of the infamous Ludlow Country Club’s “Moonlight Gang.” Having lived on the 5th hole of LCC for almost 70 years, Luiz collected literally thousands of lost golf balls and required anyone who was even considering playing golf someday to take at least one bag of balls home. Luiz could fix just about anything and loved to work in his beautiful yard. If Luiz attended your wedding, regardless of whether it was 7 or 75 years ago, you likely could find the matchbook or other memento of the day still posted in his shop.
Luiz was an avid outdoorsman who loved his daily walks in the woods, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. Each year he dedicated two weeks of his vacation to deer hunting season, cooking the guys a breakfast of chorica and eggs each day before heading out. Luiz also was long-standing member of the Gremio Lusitano Club and a dedicated soccer fan. While a quiet man with rarely a harsh word for anyone, Luiz would not hesitate to loudly express displeasure with soccer referees’ bad calls.
Luiz was the beloved husband of 69 years to Mary (Henriques) Varao. Luiz and Mary were partners in raising their family and keeping a home. Luiz did not hesitate to wash floors, do laundry, or any other chore that needed to be completed. Luiz also was a loving father to Marylou Fabbo and partner Timothy Murphy of Wilbraham, and Luanne Perham and husband Dean of Hampden. Luiz loved spending time with his grandchildren Austin and Marissa Fabbo, and Mason, Hudson, and Sienna Perham, who fondly called him "Guy." Regardless of whether the game was home or hours away, Luiz made sure he attended just about all of his grandchildren's numerous sporting event whether it be soccer, rugby, swimming, lacrosse or anything else. Luiz also would not hesitate to lend a helping hand to his daughters, grandchildren, or just about anyone else who was working on a project.
Luiz was a dear brother to the late Arminda Bassette, who was named after a younger sister who had passed at an early age. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and other loving extended family members as well as dear friends. Funeral services for Luiz were held privately by his family with burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Donations in Luiz’ memory can be made to the Cancer Research Institute at www.cancerresearch.org or 29 Broadway, Floor 4, New York, NY 10006-3111
