Obituary for Manuel Fernandes
Manuel Fernandes, 84, of Ludlow passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019. Born in Travassos da Cha, Portugal to the late Manuel Lopes Pereira and Senhorinha Fernandes, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1966 and settled in Ludlow, MA. Manuel was a faithful communicant of Our Lady Fatima Parish and a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club. He was employed as a construction worker for many years where he displayed his strong work ethic. He enjoyed watching European soccer matches, especially his favorite team Benfica. Manuel loved having meals with his family, which always included his homemade wine. He enjoyed spending summers with his wife in his favorite place on earth, his village of Travassos. He leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Lucia (Goncalves) Fernandes of Ludlow; loving daughters Senhorinha Dias and her husband Armenio of Belchertown, MA, Anna Maria Bernard and husband Jeffrey of Hopkinton, MA, and Ilda Panetta and her partner Ron LaRocque of Belchertown, MA; cherished grandchildren Jessica, Eric, Katie Lynn, Michael, Stephen, Kimberly and Juliana; along with his great grandchildren, Arya, George and Milo. Manuel also leaves his sisters Maria Rodrigues and husband Mario, and Ana Goncalves and her husband Avelino, all of Ludlow, as well as several dear nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 at 9:00 am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Monday evening from 4:00-7:00 pm.
