Obituary for Manuel Fernandes
Manuel Fernandes, 81, of Indian Orchard, died peacefully on March 4, 2014 with his beloved family by his side. Born in Travassos de Cha, Montalegre, Portugal, he lived for many years in Brazil before moving to Bridgeport in 1970 eventually settling in Indian Orchard in 1974. He worked for many years as a bus driver in Brazil and at Art Cement Company in Wilbraham. Manuel was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and proud member of the Gremio Lusitano Club. He also loved to gardening, animals, and working around the house, but his greatest joy in life was spending time with his loving family. Manuel was the beloved husband of 52 years to Luisa (Pereira) Fernandes; a loving father to Francisco Fernandes, of Bridgeport, CT, Silvia Fernandes, of Ludlow, and Veni Bastos and husband Henrique “Hank”, of Ludlow; a cherished grandfather to Christopher Chelo and girlfriend Veronica, Brendon Fernandes, Erik Bastos, and Yvonne Bastos; an adoring great-grandfather to Aidan Chelo; a dear brother to Luisa G. Fernandes, of Ludlow, Felismina Paula Fernandes, of Brazil, Albino Fernandes, of Brazil, and the late Jose, Joao, Fernando, and Domingos Fernandes; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. The family also wishes to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and entire staff of Wingate of Springfield for all of their exceptional care. Funeral services for Manuel will be held on Saturday, March 8th at 8:00amm from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth Parish at 9:00am followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Friday from 4:00-7:00pm
