Obituary for Manuel Fernandes
Manuel DaCosta Fernandes, 88, of Ludlow passed away peacefully in the care and comfort of his home surrounded by his family on Monday, February 4th, 2013. Born in Fernao Joanes, Portugal to the late Bernardino and Laurinda (Gama) Fernandes, he has lived in Ludlow for many years and was a faithful communicant of St. Elizabeth Parish. He served in the Portuguese Army honorably for 2 years as a HAM (Morse Code) Radio operator, was a proud member of the Portuguese American Citizens Club and an avid Benfica soccer fan. Manuel was a master tailor, working for Yale Genton for over 45 years and then as a self employed professional tailor where he served his clients throughout the community and was fondly remembered as “Mr. Two Days”. He was the husband of the late Lionilda (Teles) Fernandes who sadly predeceased him in 1999. His joy and happiness in life was spending time with his family, he leaves his beloved daughter Maria (Fernandes) Gomes and her husband Antonio of Ludlow; loving granddaughter Jennifer (Gomes) Calheno and her husband Agostino Jr. of Ludlow; his cherished great-grandson Jackson Calheno; his caring sister-in-law Alcina Fernandes in Portugal and his late brother Rogerio Fernandes. He also leaves his extended dear friends and family, Jorge and Elena Ganhao, Fausto and Maria Marta, Jose and Maria Gomes, Armand and Cristina Saraiva, Paul and Lori Marta, Scott Ganhao as well as close friends Luis and Aida Ganhao and their sons Pedro and Christopher along with many nieces and nephews from the Teles family. Funeral services celebrating Manny’s life will be held on Friday February 8th, 2013 at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Elizabeth Church followed by interment in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visiting hours are Thursday evening from 4:00pm-7:00pm.
