Obituary for Manuel 'Ferreira' Silva
Manuel "Ferreira" Silva, 98, of Ludlow, died peacefully on March 21, 2013 with his loving family by his side. Born in Aljubarrota, Portugal, son of the late Manuel Ferreria and Maria (Faustina) Silva, he came to Ludlow on March 20th, 1949, where he was a lifetime resident and the recipient of the golden cane in April of 2010 as the oldest living male in the town. He was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and proud member of the Gremio Lusitano Club. He worked for many years at Easco Hand Tools and for the former Enfield Construction Co. where he worked on the development of the Mass Turnpike. Manuel loved to garden and make homemade wine in the fall. He also loved to watch his beloved team "Benfica", but his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and traveling with his wife. Manuel was the beloved husband of 72 years to Victoria (Gil) Silva, a loving father to Joaquim “Jack” Silva and wife Maria de Lourdes, both of Ludlow; a dear brother to Joaquina Pio, of Ludlow, Nazare Lopes and Ilda Paulo and husband Manuel, of Chicopee, and the late Joaquim and Silvestre Ferreira, Maria Paulino, Ana Lopes and Dionilda Fragoso; a cherished grandfather to Grace Rock and husband Donald, Jay Silva, Steven Silva, and Elizabeth Silva, all of Ludlow; an adoring great-grandfather of Nick Rock, Allyson Silva, and Jack Silva; and he also leaves many dear sisters in law; along with many loving nieces and nephews and extended family members and dear friends throughout the community. Manuel’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Dr’s, nurses, and entire staff of Wing Memorial Hospital, Ludlow Ambulance, and most recently the Dr.'s, nurses and staff of BayState Neurosciences Unit and Baystate Hospice for their caring and compassion. The family would also like to thank his personal care attendants and nurses, Julie, Judy, Carleny, Aide, Marissa, Linda and Nido, whom Manuel called “Meu Amigo”, who have been so lovingly caring for him at home. And a very special thank you to his nieces Fernanda and Maria for all of their special care and support throughout the past few years.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 9:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Monday from 4:00-7:00pm.

Donations may be made in Manuel’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima Church 438 Winsor St. Ludlow, Ma. 01056.
