Obituary for Manuel J. "Mango" Gonsalves
Manuel J. “Mango” Gonsalves, 74, of Ludlow, was called safely to Heaven on Friday, May 12, 2006, at his home. Born in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late Manuel and Aldina (Mello) Gonsalves and lived most of his life in Ludlow where he was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 1950 and was a U.S. Army veteran serving his country honorable from 1950-1953 during the Korean War. He served in the 40th Infantry Division as the 223rd REGT. SGT. and forward Observer for 88mm Mortar Platoon. During the war, Manuel was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, European Defender Ribbon with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was employed for 20 years at Monsanto and 18 years at Milton Bradley before his retirement and was an avid bowler; bowling in leagues with both companies. He was also a member of the Portuguese American Citizens Club, an avid boxing fan and was recognized by the American Red Cross as an Active Hero. Manuel was a beloved husband of 49 years to Zora (Monteiro) Gonsalves; the loving father of Mark Gonsalves and his wife Gina of Vermont; a cherished grandfather to Meredith and Brittany; a dear brother of Joseph Gonsalves and Theresa Silva, both of Ludlow, and Mary Norowski of Agawam; a beloved godfather to Karen Ferreira, Cindy Fuller and Chris Monteiro and also leaves several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, family members and friends. Funeral services with military honors are on Tuesday morning at 10am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Cecilia’s Church, Wilbraham at 11am followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5-8pm and donations may be made in Manuel’s memory to Muscular Dystrophy Association P.O.
