Obituary for Manuel Rocha DaSilva
Manuel Rocha DaSilva, 83, of Ludlow, was called Safely Home on April 14, 2011. Born in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Azores, son of the late Hilario DaSilva Conde and Emilia Clara Rocha, he lived most of his life in Ludlow and was a 1949 graduate of Ludlow H.S. Manuel was a United States Marine Corps Veteran proudly serving his country during the Korean War and also served 6 years in the USMC Reserves. He worked for Mass Plastics, F.W. Sickles, Monsanto, and for over 20 years at Pratt & Whitney before retiring. He was a faithful communicant and founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Church assisting in its construction, and was responsible for installing the hardwood floor in the basement for roller skating and other events. Manuel was a member and past president of the Portuguese American Citizens Club, member and past finance secretary for the Gremio Lusitano Club, a member of the Ludlow Fish & Game Club, Oregon Sportsman's Club, American Legion Post 0052, and Ludlow Senior Center, founding member of the Lusitano Language Institute, and former member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he performed vessel safety checks. Manuel was the beloved husband of 60 years to Arminda "Mimi" (Mendes) DaSilva; a loving father to Joseph DaSilva and companion Barbara, of Maryland, Manny DaSilva and wife Cher, of Palmer, and John DaSilva and wife Deborah, of Ludlow, cherished grandfather to Jennifer Sheridan and husband Dan, of Heath, MA, Brian DaSilva and wife Jenny of Garland, TX, Michael DaSilva, of Somerville, MA, and Kristina Ford, of Sutton, MA; an adoring great-grandfather to Tyler and Haley Sheridan; a dear brother to the late Celina de Rocha Conde and Maria Teresa Veiga. Dear brother-in-law to Beatrice Jorge and her husband the late Chief John Jorge. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-laws Alice and Fermino Jorge and Yvonne and Arthur Chapman. He was loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was the nephew of the late Reverend Manuel Rocha and also leaves several loving extended family members and dear friends. A special thank you to Anne Wright, his visiting nurse, the entire staff at Keystone Commons and the Ludlow Police and Paramedics Departments. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 8:30am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial with Military Honors in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam at 11:00am. Visiting hours are on Tuesday from 4-7 pm.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Manuel's memory to the Ludlow Boys and Girls Club.
