Obituary for Maria (Costa) Tavares
Maria C. (Costa) Tavares, 88, of Ludlow was called quietly to heaven on Saturday August, 4 2007 at Wingate of Wilbraham, with her loving family by her side. Born in Ludlow on May 30, 1919 she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Belmira Costa. She was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, where she and her husband Antonio were among the many who helped establish the church and raise funds for the Our Lady of Fatima Statue. She worked for many years in the garment industry. Maria started at the Ludlow Mills in the Jute factory, she then went to the Cromwell Mills, Alamac Mills, of the Indian Orchard section of Springfield, before retiring from the Elco Dress Company of Holyoke in the early 1980’s to care for her ailing husband. Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband Antonio in 1983,  three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her loving daughter Cecily A. Piper and her husband Harold (Butch), her precious grandsons Harold II Piper and his wife Jenna and Bartlett Piper. Also by loving, watchful son Anthony (Tony) Tavares. She also leaves a sister Albertina Rego and a brother Eduardo Casado as well as many loving nieces, nephew, neighbors and friends with whom she would share a smile and kind words. At the family’s request Maria’s funeral services will be held privately and Ludlow Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Donations may be made in Maria’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 438 Winsor St. Ludlow, MA. 01056.
