Maria da Assuncao Alves (Fernandes) Jorge, 77, of Indian Orchard, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Montalegre, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Luisa Alves Fernandes.
Maria retired from the former Springfield Wire after working decades in textiles and manufacturing. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, cooking, and caring for her grandchildren. She was an accomplished traveler, having visited her native Portugal as well as Spain, France, Mexico, Argentina and locations all over the U.S.
Maria was the beloved wife of the late Amandio Jorge who predeceased her in 2008; a loving mother to Luisa Maria Antonucci and husband Carl Jr., of Longmeadow, Margarida Jorge, of Washington DC, and Cristine Jorge and husband Richard Giuffrida of Coventry, CT; a cherished grandmother to Natalie, Antonio, and David Antonucci; and a dear sister to Jose and Joao Fernandes and the late Aurelio Fernandes, all of Portugal.
Family and friends are asked to gather for a Funeral Liturgy on Friday, March 20th at 10:00am directly at St. Elizabeth Parish. Burial will be held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Maria’s memory to the Patient Trust Account at Western Massachusetts Hospital, 91 East Mountain Road, Westfield, MA 01085 which is dedicated to providing basic services for hospital patients in need (please note “Patient Trust Account” on all checks).
