Obituary for Maria Isabel “Vozinha” (Fernandes) Carlos
Maria Isabel “Vozinha” (Fernandes) Carlos, Ludlow’s oldest resident, passed away at home at the age of 103, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Barrio, Alcobaça, Portugal, Maria immigrated in 1967 to Ludlow and worked at Ludlow Manufacturing Co. before her retirement. She was born in 1917, the year known as the Miracle of Fatima, and her unwavering faith and deep spiritual connection guided her throughout her life and inspired those around her. One of her most remarkable qualities was her unfailing love and devotion to praying the rosary and would do so daily in the name of each family member. Her prayers for people provided such comfort and peace that she was often sought out by family and friends to pray for them when in need. She was a devoted communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Maria touched so many lives and will be affectionately remembered for her kindness. She will also be remembered fondly for her love of gardening, cooking, and reading. Her greatest love was her family and the cherished time spent with them.
Maria was the beloved wife of the late Jose Marques Carlos, who predeceased her in 1988; a loving mother to Joaquim Carlos and wife Adilia, Maria F. Sousa and husband João, all of Ludlow, and the late Madelena Marques Carlos; a dear sister to the late João Fernandes Soares; a cherished Vozinha to granddaughter Cathy Horne, husband Kevin, and their children Ian, Keira, and Isabel, and granddaughter Sally Carlos and husband Derick Stryer, and their daughter Emme. Maria also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Funeral services for Vozinha will be held on Tuesday, May 11th, from the Ludlow Funeral Home. Walk-through visiting hours, observing social distancing and non-contact with her family, will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated in Our Lady of Fatima Parish at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery.
