Obituary for Maria Joaquina (De Moura) Alves
Maria Joaquina (De Moura) Alves, 84, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born in Medeiros da Cha, Montalegre, Portugal, daughter of the late Antonio Alvares De Moura and Rosa Afonso. While in Portugal, she was a member of her church choir and also taught Sunday school. Maria married her sweetheart, Antonio Afonso Alves on April 27, 1957. They had four children. She immigrated to Ludlow with her family in 1973, where she was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. Maria worked for most of her life at Winkler Flexible Plastics before retiring, and in her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, gardening, shopping, traveling and cooking; but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a kind-hearted person who enjoyed telling stories of her youth and brought a smile to everyone’s heart. Sadly she was predeceased by her loving Antonio in 2008. A loving mother to Joaquim Alves and wife Judy, Antonio Alves and wife Teresa, Jose Alves and fiancée Jennifer Rubbo, and Ermelinda Alves Goncalves and husband Matias, all of Ludlow; a devoted grandmother to Melinda Conway and husband Tom, Jacinda Alves and fiancée Michael Stewart, Anthony Alves, Derek Alves, Dominique Alves, Paiton Alves, Alexis Alves, Mila Alves, Adam Goncalves, David Goncalves and Mariana Goncalves; an adoring great-grandmother to Jack Conway and John Conway; a dear sister to Jose, Joao, and Manuel De Moura, Maria Rosa Dias, Helena Rodrigues and the late Ana Rodrigues; a dear sister-in-law to Ana De Moura, Maria De Moura, Lucia De Moura, Antonio Dias, Joaquim Rodrigues and Antonio Rodrigues, Joaquim and late wife Judite Alves, Ana and late husband Joao Goncalves and the late Maria Afonso Alves; and also leaves many nieces, nephews, loving extended family members, and dear friends. The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to the Caregivers from Victory Home Health Care, West Mass Eldercare and Baystate Medical Center for their exceptional care of Maria. Funeral services for Maria will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 9:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Friday from 4:00-7:00pm and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
