Obituary for Maria (Mendes) Goncalves
Maria (Mendes) Goncalves, 85, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Penedones, Portugal, daughter of the late Antonio Mendes and Albina Juliana, she immigrated to the United States settling in Ludlow, where she was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Maria enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, and cooking; but above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Maria was the beloved wife of 61 years to Bento Goncalves; a loving mother to Tony M. Goncalves and wife Henrietta, and Maria Maggi and husband John; a devoted grandmother to Hailee Lester and husband Ryan, Kyle Goncalves and wife Kelsey, Melissa Nix and husband Jeremy, Nathan Hague, and Madalyn Hague; a cherished great-grandmother to Cecelia Lester; a dear sister to the late Antonio Mendes, Laura Dias, and Ilda Mendes; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. Visiting hours for Maria are on Tuesday, August 10th from 5:00-7:00pm at the Ludlow Funeral Home. Funeral services are on Wednesday, August 11th at 10:00am from the funeral home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria’s memory to The Alzheimer's Association (alz.org)
