Obituary for Maria (Ramos) Martin
Maria (Ramos) Martin, 93, of Chicopee was called to Heaven on January 28, 2020. Born and raised in Ludlow, one of eleven children to John and Maria Ramos of 26 Franklin Street, she attended Ludlow High School and was named female class athlete, Class of 1944. Maria moved to Chicopee upon her wedding to Joseph A. Martin at Our Lady of Fatima in Ludlow in August of 1949. Their wedding took place in the basement of the church as it was still in the final stages of construction prior to its grand opening on Labor Day weekend. They remained happily married until his passing in 2006.
A lifelong devout Catholic, Maria thoroughly enjoyed working as a teacher’s aide and translator for the children of the Mass Migrant program from 1980 to 2000. She loved playing bingo at several churches in the area, and was always ready for any chance to play Scrabble for hours with family. She was a fixture at her grandson Jeff Deren’s soccer matches, following him from Chicopee Comp to UMass to the Western Mass Pioneers at Lusitania Stadium in Ludlow.
Maria was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, and her son, William. She is survived by her children Michael Martin and wife Vallery, of Belchertown, Robert Martin and wife Martina, of Germany, Thomas Martin, of Ludlow, Christopher Martin and wife Sharon, of Chicopee, and Linda Jopson and husband Kevin, of Chicopee. She will also be dearly missed by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the nurses and staff of Mont Marie in Holyoke for the exceptional care provided over the past year and a half.
Visiting hours for Maria are on Sunday, February 2nd from 4:00-7:00pm in Ludlow Funeral Home. Funeral services are on Monday, February 3rd at 10:00am from the funeral home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery.
