Obituary for Maria Virginia (Alves) Batista
Maria Virginia (Alves) Batista, 72, of Belchertown passed away peacefully at Baystate ICU on Thursday December 2nd, 2010, with her husband and daughters holding her hand every step of the way. Born in Chaves, Portugal to the late Manuel Joaquim and Alda (Pereira) Alves, she was a former communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow. Virginia volunteered for several organizations in Portugal such as the Red Cross and several nursing homes. She loved to crochet, sew and garden but she truly loved being with all her friends and family in the United States and Portugal. Virginia was a tremendously compassionate person, always giving to others and lending a helping hand. Her smile and beautiful energy lit up a room. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. She was spunky and loved life and was brave and stoic to the end fighting her illness. It is with heavy hearts that she leaves her adored family; her beloved husband of 52 years Antonio A Batista; loving daughters Shirley Sbriscia and her husband Kevin of Belchertown and Christine Auffrey and her partner Steve Williams of  Belchertown; cherished grandchildren Kyle Auffrey, Kayla Auffrey and Krysta Sbriscia as well as many caring friends and family here and in Portugal. It was Virginia’s wish that her visitation and funeral be held privately by her family. All funeral arrangements were entrusted to Ludlow Funeral Home.
