Obituary for Marie "Mick" Courtney
Marie “Mick” (Donovan) Courtney, 95, formerly of Ludlow and Wilbraham Ma, Del Rio, Tx and most recently a longtime resident of Pittsfield Ma, affectionately known to all as “Nana” passed away peacefully on October 21, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Ware, Ma to the late John and Margaret Donovan she later attended Springfield public schools, graduated from Commerce High School, and attended American International College where she met her husband with who she would spend the next 63 years. She was also a proud American Red Cross volunteer as well as a local “Rosie the Riveter” during WW II.
A lifelong voracious reader, bridge player, and traveler, Nana spent her early adult life corralling her ten children and their multitude of friends off to various activities and creating a welcoming home for all who entered 11 Oakland Street. She later spent her well-deserved retirement with her husband Richard “Dick” Courtney traveling the US, taking in our national treasures, and visiting friends and family. An avid Boston sports fan, Nana cheered on the Patriots, Red Sox and her beloved Celtics while attending games well into her 80’s. She loved camping and enjoyed many an evening spent around the campfire reminiscing about family escapades over the years. Nana outshined many younger than herself (including some of her children) becoming computer proficient at age 75. She enjoyed researching her family Irish heritage which was followed by a trip to Ireland at the age of 87 with several children, grandchildren, and in-laws in tow.
Marie was the beloved wife of the late Richard Courtney, who predeceased her in 2013; a loving mother to Daniel (Elizabeth), Kevin (Carrie), Richard, Christopher (Teena), and Michael (Cindy) Courtney, Kathleen (Courtney) Gentile (Nicky), Debra (Courtney) Kielman, Mary Courtney (Annie), and was predeceased by two of her sons David and Shawn Courtney (Elaine); a cherished and adored grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. Funeral services for Marie will be held on Friday, November 5th. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at St. Cecilia Parish in Wilbraham at 11:00 am for a Liturgy of Christian Burial followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery in Ludlow. There are no visiting hours and Ludlow Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marie's memory to St. Jude's Children's Hospital Tribute Program PO Box 1000, Dept. 142 Memphis, TN 38148-0142. (stjude.org)
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice of the Berkshires and Father Christopher Malatesta of St. Agnes Church in Dalton for their kindness and care toward our mother.
