The family of Mario Cachucho is regretfully announcing that Mario passed peacefully on March 28, 2023. He was 97 years young.
Soon after being born in New Bedford, MA on May 29, 1925, he moved to Portugal with his brother Jack and sister Alice. At the age of 9, Mario and siblings returned to the United States, reuniting with family in New York.
Mario entered the army, serving our country in WWII until 1946. While in service he earned a Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars. We are proud of his service. Not known to many, Mario played a mean mandolin, both in the army and at home.
Upon returning from service, Mario worked at International Silver in Meriden CT as an engraver. Around this time Mario would attend the dances in Ludlow and there he was gifted when he met a most amazing woman, Barbara Costa. In time, they married and built a nice brick home together, with the help of friends, in Wallingford CT. Together they planted a strawberry field in the backyard.
Mario and Barbara opened Mario’s Beauty Salon, where every customer and stylist was appreciated and enjoyed. It was Fifth Avenue Luxury for the times.
In 1988, we lost Barbara a strong, creative, and loving woman, mother, and wife. Mario then retired but remained active. “The key is to never stop moving”. He enjoyed golf and played for many years with his buddies at the Ludlow Country Club.
Mario last resided at Keystone Commons in Ludlow, where he experienced great kindness, respect, caring and love. We would like to thank everyone who has been a part of his life.
Mario leaves behind his daughters, Linda and husband Eddie Simmons, and Lisa and husband David Sedelow, grandchildren Ian and wife Danielle Sedelow, and Alissa Sedelow and partner Aaron Gonzales, and dear friends Vasco and Maria Costa. Also surviving are his sister-in-law Hilda Cachucho and cousin Louinda Ramos. Mario was the devoted husband of 39 years to Barbara (Costa) Cachucho until her passing in 1988. Mario predeceases his sister Alice and brother Jack who passed in 2022 at the age of 101.
“To all my family and friends: Good luck and God’s blessing on each of you, forever.”
