Obituary for Merico "Pope" Petrolati
Merico “Pope” Petrolati, 93, US Army Veteran, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday morning November 15, 2006 at Mercy Hospital.  Born in Ludlow, the son of Emilia and Attilio Petrolati, he lived in Ludlow all of his life and was a faithful communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church.  A graduate of Baypath College, he worked at Ludlow Mills and was the supervisor of the Dye House.  Pope was best known as co-owner of Pope’s Paint Center with his brother Amedeo for over 60 years and continued to be actively involved in the business before his death.  He was on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club for over 40 years and was the recipient of a Bronze Keystone Service Bar from the Boys Club of America.  Pope also served on the Board of Investments for Ludlow Savings Bank, was a charter member of the Elks Club and Unity A.C., a 50 year member of the American Legion Veteran Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus and was inducted as Man of the Year by the Grange Club.  One of the most special moments in his life was his 1989 trip to Rome where he had a personal audience with Pope John Paul II.  Pope was the loving husband of Dorothy (Smrecek) Petrolati, who predeceased him on July 19, 1981; was the beloved father of Stephen Petrolati and State Representative Thomas Petrolati and his wife Kathy, all of Ludlow; a cherished grandfather to Noel, Dorothy, Danielle and Ashley, who he loved and adored; a dear brother to Victor Petrolati of Ludlow and the late Amedeo, who predeceased him on June 24, 1999, and leaves many other cherished family members and friends.  Pope was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend who was always thinking of others and will be greatly missed by many.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday Morning, November 18, 2006.  Friends and family are asked to gather for a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. John the Baptist Church at 10am followed by burial in St. Aloysius cemetery.  Visiting hours are on Friday evening from 4-8pm at the Ludlow Funeral Home and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pope’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
