Obituary for Nathan Michael Carreira
Nathan Michael Carreira, 15, of Ludlow, passed away unexpectedly on March 26, 2018. A kind, charismatic, and lovable person, he was a cherished member of numerous communities. He was a freshman at Ludlow High School and an accomplished athlete, starring on the Varsity Ski team, playing for the Junior Varsity football team, and catching for the Ludlow Youth Baseball Association. In his free time, he enjoyed skateboarding, mountain biking, and cheering for the Denver Broncos; he played guitar, liked to cook, composed beautiful poetry, and excelled in the arts—especially drawing. He served his local congregation, Christ the King Parish, as a communicant and he volunteered every year at the annual picnic.
Skiing was Nathan’s true passion. Taking to the sport at age two, he quickly developed an unparalleled love for racing and spent every weekend at Stratton Mountain. He smiled brightest on his skis while enjoying the snow in Vermont. Nathan has amassed an impressive collection of medals and awards in the highly competitive USSA VARA racing series, and earned a spot on the U16 Vermont state team; at the Eastern finals, he placed 16th overall in Giant Slalom and 12th overall in Slalom. Nathan’s work ethic and attitude made him an agile talent. In his debut high school season, he placed 3rd overall in the PVIAC South division ski league and 15th overall at the Massachusetts State Skiing Championships. His spirit will live on through his many ski buddies, especially his close friends Nick Morin, Mickey Wehrle, Doug Philips, Anna Davis, and Nick, Matt, and Andrew Jacobs.
Nathan was the beloved son of Michael and Karen (Tokarz) Carreira; an adoring big brother to Natalie Jane Carreira; the cherished grandson of Beverly Tokarz and late husband Thaddeus, and Lorraine Carreira and husband Theodore “Butchie” Zurawski; the loving nephew of Tad Tokarz, Sharon Tokarz, and Susan Carreira. He also leaves behind many extended family members, including Ted and Judy Chmura, Joan Burkot and family, and Beverly Mendes. He will be sorely missed by his family and the friends who loved him.
Visiting hours for Nathan will be held on Sunday, April 1st from 5:00 to 8:00pm at Ludlow Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 2nd at 9:00 at the funeral home, followed by Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Christ the King Church, and burial at Island Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nathan’s memory to the Stratton Community Foundation PO Box 523 Stratton Mountain, VT 05155 (strattonfoundation.org).
