Paulina Maria (Ataide) Bettencourt passed away peacefully Monday April 15th 2024, at the age of 90 surrounded by her family. Paulina was born in Praia De Sao Mateus, Graciosa Island, Acores, Portugal. She was the daughter of Manuel De Sousa Ataide and Olivia Guia Ataide. She got married in 1953 to Floriberto Bettencourt, they were married for 47 years until his death in 2000. Paulina and her family immigrated to the United States in 1968 settling in Ludlow MA. She worked at Spalding Sports in Chicopee for almost 30 years before retiring. Paulina was a devoted Catholic and was a CCD teacher in her church in Portugal before coming to the United States. She was a proud member of the Our Lady of Fatima Church in Ludlow where she was a Lector for a number of years. Paulina thoroughly enjoyed picking up her friends and driving them to mass along with visits to the nursing home to cheer up the residents. She loved talking to people and making them laugh with her stories and playful sense of humor. She was also an active member of the Gremio Lusitano Club in Ludlow. Paulina leaves her son John and his wife Ana, her daughter Maria De Jesus Fraga and her husband Raul Fraga, her son Paulo and her daughter Isabel. She also leaves 6 grandchildren, Michael, Diane, Monica, Melissa, Mathew and Lanie and 15 great grandchildren, Ava, Ivy, Giuliana, Catalina, Jonas , Sienna, Gabriella, Sophia, Mila, Farrah, Levi, Walker, Carter, Mallory, and Rose. Funeral services for Paulina will be held on Thursday April 18, 2024 from the Ludlow Funeral Home. Visitation is from 9:15-10:15am with a Liturgy of Christian Mass celebrated at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Fatima.
