Obituary for Rita (Gauthier) Burek
Rita (Gauthier) Burek, 98, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at home on February 7, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Rita was born on September 19, 1923 to parents Joseph Gauthier and Sarah Gautreau Gauthier from New Brunswick, Canada. She was the third child of four and predeceased by older siblings, Eva Gauthier Frappier of Indian Orchard and Alcide Gauthier of Ludlow. Younger brother, Wilfred Joe Gauthier is living in Ludlow.
Rita was married to Edward Eddie Burek on September 11, 1948. They are the parents of Judith Burek Bissonnette of Harwich, James Burek also of Harwich and Richard Burek of Plymouth.
She leaves her children's spouses, Gary Bissonnette, Julie Burek and Elisa Burek and three grandchildren, Amie Bissonnette Medeiros of Yarmouth Port, Sage Liest of Brewster and Chiara Burek of Plymouth.
Rita also leaves nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Rita was a former student of the St. John the Baptist Catholic School and Ludlow High School. As a young girl, Rita enjoyed roller skating, going to the movies, dances and later, vacations at the beach with friends.
Being a stay at home mom in the 50's and 60's, Rita spent her free time sewing, crafting intricate Christmas decorations and attended braided rug classes with Eddie, making a full size living room rug together.
Her call for volunteering was always a part of her life throughout the years. There was always a call for baking for every event that came along, including the Soup Kitchen at St. Mary's in Westfield. She was a former member of the Ludlow Hospital Auxiliary and the Sisters of St. Anne and at times she would drive the Sisters to their medical appointments in Springfield.
In the 1970's Rita began to work at the Smith & Wesson company as a final inspector, until retirement.
Rita has spent her elderly years with each of her children in their homes on Cape Cod, but especially loved being in Plymouth watching her baby grandchild, Chiara, grow. She always loved and was truly grateful to Peggy Lepper, niece and second daughter to Rita, and brother Joe for all the time they spent with her while at her home in Ludlow.
Funeral services for Rita are on Saturday, February 12th. Visiting hours are from 9:00-10:15 in Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in St. Elizabeth Parish followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery.
