Obituary for Robert W. Scheer
Robert W. Scheer, 76, of Ludlow passed away unexpectedly at home on July 23, 2020. Born in Newburyport, Ma., son of the late Alfred and Julia (Walent) Scheer, he was a graduate of Newburyport High School. He attended Nathaniel Hawthorne College graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Archeology and went on to further his studies at Salem State University. Robert was a United States Army Combat Veteran proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War. Robert worked for 48 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts beginning his career as a case worker and retiring in 2017 as the Director of MassHealth in Springfield. During retirement, he could not sit still. He was an outdoors kind of guy who enjoyed rising early every morning to hike the trails at Quabbin and Mt.Tom and to bike at the Southwick Rail Trail. He enjoyed sending pics of the wildlife he encountered along the trails and while working in his backyard. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who he often took on hikes. He also enjoyed taking family road trips. Robert enjoyed playing golf, tennis and softball. He loved his time pitching for the Commodores and Helen's Outlaws softball teams. Robert spent countless hours applying his endless knowledge of Anthropology and Archeology throughout New England. He would come home and proudly place his artifacts on the kitchen table and expected no one to touch them. He was a member of the Massachusetts Archeological Society. He took part in numerous "digs" including that of Emperor Barbarossa's Tomb in Germany. Robert was a proud Precinct 6 voter and enjoyed a good political argument. He liked watching historical documentaries and old westerns. He relished his collections of coins and World War II relic firearms. He will be sadly missed by his beloved cat Vee.
Robert was the beloved husband of 53 years to Lynda (Merkel) Scheer; a devoted father to Deb Burnett, of Wilbraham; Darren Scheer and wife Amy, of Tampa, FL, Carolyn Scheer and husband Todd Williams, of Southwick, Jason Scheer, of Ludlow, and the late Eric Kyle Scheer, who predeceased him in 2015; a cherished grandfather to Kyra and Brittany Burnett, Zain Chandler, Kaylah, Caius and Kaleah Scheer, Chloe and Ella Williams, and the late Jalynn Scheer; a dear brother to Bill Scheer and wife Lou, Fred Scheer, and Cathy Cuerden; he also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. Funeral services for Robert will be held privately by his family with Ludlow Funeral Home entrusted with his care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Quabbin, Inc., Quabbin Reservoir Administration Building, 485 Ware Road, Belchertown, MA. or Friends of the Southwick Rail Trail C/O Southwick Park & Recreation, 454 College Highway, Southwick, MA.
