Obituary for Saudade (Ramos) Fonseca
Saudade Ramos Fonseca, 76, of Ludlow, passed away on February 2, 2021. Born in Vilas Boas, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Jose and Maria Ramos. In Portugal, Saudade was a hairdresser before immigrating to the United States where she met the love of her life, Jose Fonseca. They married in 1972 and settled in Ludlow, where Saudade continued work as a hairdresser at Eva’s Salon. She also ran the family business, Ludlow Cutter Grinding Company, alongside her husband. Saudade was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church in Ludlow.
Saudade had a huge heart and a kindness that spoke volumes. She had a big, beautiful smile, especially when she was dancing with her husband or spending time with her children and granddaughter. Saudade lived to give – whether it was the food and flowers she grew in her garden, the tasty treats she would bake, or the scarves and booties she would make – she loved to gift the fruits of her labor to loved ones. She also enjoyed taking long walks and laughing at her husband’s silly jokes. Saudade cherished time with family and friends and would welcome any guest into her home with an abundance of love and warmth. No one could leave without something delicious to eat. Her incredible cooking will forever be missed, and her family recipes will live on for generations.
Saudade was a wonderful and loving mother to her son, David, and wife, Stacey, of Agawam, and her daughter, Elizabeth, and husband, James, of London, UK. Saudade was an adoring grandmother to her granddaughter, Jocelyn. She is survived by her loving brother Armindo and sister-in-law, Janice, of Quincy, as well as her sister, Constance, and husband, Jose, of Ludlow. She also leaves behind beloved inlaws and many nieces and nephews, as well as extended family and friends in the United States, Portugal, Brazil and England. Saudade was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jose, and brothers Antonio and Joaquim.
Walk-through, no-contact visiting hours for Saudade will be held on Monday, February 8 from 9 a.m – 10:15 a.m. at Ludlow Funeral Home. Her funeral mass and burial will be held privately by her family.
In Saudade’s honor, the family requests you share a yummy treat, and spread love and kindness just the way she always would. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ludlow Boys and Girls Club, 91 Claudia’s Way, Ludlow, MA.
