Obituary for Vincent Albert Thompson
Vincent Albert Thompson left this world on August 6, 2021 after a lengthy and courageous battle with lung disease. He was the seventh son born to Peter and Emelda (Lavoie) Thompson and the eighth of nine children. After graduating from Ludlow High School in 1978, Vin worked for 32 years for Monsanto and Solutia. During his tenure, he worked to improve conditions for his co workers as a long time member of both the Employee Negotiating Team and the Plant Safety Team. From 1994 through 2017, Vin generously donated his time to the youth of Ludlow by coaching soccer, baseball, and basketball. He assumed a variety of leadership positions by organizing and directing tournaments for his players in each of these sports.
Vin was a big man with a personality and a heart to match. He was a wonderful storyteller who enjoyed regaling his family and friends by sharing his varied life experiences. He had an unabashed enthusiasm for life that was infectious. Despite facing many enduring challenges in his life, Vin possessed a profound goodness and sense of humanity. Vin had a great love of music; enjoying live music from his teen years until recently. Some of his favorites were the Grateful Dead, NRPS, and Warren Zevon. There was nothing he loved more than grabbing his guitar and jamming with friends.
By far, the most momentous day of Vin’s life was when he married the love of his life, Deidra Savitt, to whom he was married for 32 years. Together, they raised three loving children: Breanne Costa and her husband, Filipe, Wesley and his wife, Korynn, and Ian and his wife, Andreia. Vin was enormously proud of his children’s professional accomplishments and, most importantly, of the wonderful people they have become. Vin also cherished being a grandfather to Dominic, Julianna, Grayson and Gregor. He was also a much beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Vin was predeceased by his oldest brother, Richard. He leaves his siblings: Peter (Polly) of Wilbraham, Bernadette Carberry (Jim) of Ware, Michael (Claire) of Wilbraham, Tim (Deb Stavseth) of Westmoreland NH, Robert (Kathy) of Springfield, Mark (Janet) of Durham CT, and Eliza Eberli (his best friend from childhood) and her husband, Dan of Ludlow. He also leaves Sandra Savitt of Enfield, CT, Bruce (Ellen) Savitt of Bullard, TX, Karen Savitt ( Patrick Heintz) of Bluffton, SC, Pamela (William) King of Chicopee, Robin Savitt-King of Hampden, and Lisa Savitt-King (David King) of Ludlow.
One of Warren Zevon’s last songs was: “Keep Me in Your Heart for a While.” Rest
assured, Vin, we will keep you in our hearts forever. You were a wonder and a treasure!
Family and friends are invited to the Ludlow Funeral Home on Friday, August 13 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for a period of visitation. MASKS SUGGESTED. A liturgy of Christian burial will be said on Saturday, August 14 at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Ludlow at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Island Pond Cemetery in Ludlow. Contributions may be made in Vincent’s memory to the American Lung Association, 1661 Worcester Rd, Suite 301, Framingham, MA 01701.
