Obituary for Wilfred A. Fontaine
Wilfred A. Fontaine, 87, of Ludlow passed away peacefully in the care and comfort of his home surrounded by his family on April 27, 2013. Born in Springfield to the late Adelard and Gladys (Quintal) Fontaine he has lived in Ludlow for many years. Wilfred proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was present at the Normandy invasion on D Day June 6, 1944. Wilfred was an avid reader, loved spending his winters in Florida with his wife visiting friends and family, but was happiest at home puttering in his workshop. Wilfred derived great joy in helping his children with their many home projects and was more than happy to offer advice or answer questions derived from his many years of experience in building projects. Wilfred retired from Unifirst Corporation in 1991 where he was a maintenance engineer and a licensed fireman and it was there that he formed a lasting friendship with his friend Charles Sutliff. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie (Wilson) Fontaine and together were married for 65 wonderful years. Wilfred was the loving father of Michael Fontaine and wife Susan of Rhode Island, Thomas Fontaine and wife Linda of Ohio, Donna Andre and husband Larry of Ludlow, David Fontaine and Debbie of Springfield, Joan Fontaine and husband Vincent Ashton of Florida, Robert Fontaine and partner Kathy Herring of Springfield and Jon Fontaine and his wife Barbara also of Springfield; cherished grandfather of 19 and great-grandfather of 12, Wilfred also leaves his sister Beverly Correll of Florida. Sadly Wilfred was predeceased by his granddaughter Ashley Andre in 2005. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday evening May 1, 2013 from 4:00pm-6:00pm at the Ludlow Funeral Home concluding with a chapel service at 6:00pm. Burial will be held privately by his family. The family has asked that in place of flowers, donations be made in Wilfred’s memory to: Baystate VNA and Hospice 50 Maple Street, Springfield, 01102.
