Obituary for William H. Martin
William H. Martin, 77, of Ludlow, died Monday October 11th, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bristol Ct., son of the late Raleigh R. & Edith (Burn) Martin, he moved to Ludlow in 1958. Bill served as a Tech Sgt. With the United States Air Force from 1951- 1968 with the AREFS, and the 99th Bomb Wing of Westover Air Force Base. He worked for many years as a salesman for Jersey Tab Card Co. of Ct, enjoyed ice boating , canoeing, was a pilot who flew a Piper Cadet, but his true pleasure was watching his beloved grandchildren play sports. He relished driving his grandsons and their friends to just about every ice hockey rink on the East Coast, Canada and some in the Mid West and West coasts. He was affectionately named “grumpers” by all his hockey friends. He also was a member of the Turner Falls Rod & Gun Club. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joanne R. (Bafus) Martin, his son Keith H. Martin of Colorado Springs, Co., his daughter, Nira Lyn Flatley, and her husband Larry of Ludlow; four cherished grandchildren, Edward Urban, of Boston, Lisa Urban of Ludlow, Melissa Flatley of Baltimore, Md., and Brian Flatley of Boston, and the late Jeffrey Martin Urban who sadly predeceased him in 2008; his adorable great grand daughter Alexis; a brother Raleigh R. Martin and his wife Mary of Hingham, Ma.; a god child Heather Nootenboom of Veradale Wa., three sisters-in-law, Sue Bafus & Aileen Johnson both of Endicott Wa. And Elaine Poffenroth, of Edmonds Wa.; several nieces and nephews, and his many good neighbors and friends. Sadly he was predeceased by a grandson Jeffrey Martin Urban in 2008. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 15th, 2010 at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with Chapel Services beginning at 10:00am, followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Thursday evening from 4:00-7:00pm and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to: Friends of the Homeless, 769 Worthington St. Springfield, MA.
