Obituary for Alberto C. Tavares
Nunca sabes o dia de amanhã - You never know what tomorrow will bring.’
A phrase that Alberto would often say and live.
Born in 1938 in Portugal, Alberto had humble beginnings growing up in Azere, a district of Coimbra. As a young man, he served several years in the Portuguese Army. In 1962, he married his love Laura, and after four years, in 1966, they immigrated to the United States with their newborn daughter Maria in tow, establishing their life in Ludlow.
Alberto worked at Uniroyal in Chicopee and later took the entrepreneurial leap to purchase Meadowbrook Plaza, on Fuller Street. For many years, Alberto and Laura operated the convenience store (now Our Town Variety) and he became well known as the ‘padeiro,’ delivering fresh bread, beer, and wine to many families throughout the local community. For over 30 years, Alberto also took pride in owning the laundromat (now The Laundry Room), creating an extension of home to many, with the highest degree of care and personal connection with customers. Alberto treated everyone with a unique kinship and always took personal interest in everyone's stories.
Alberto devoted his faith, time, and talents to Our Lady of Fatima Church through many volunteer efforts, such as the Parish Council and chairing the annual Festa. Alberto took equal pride in the furthering of Portuguese culture and community through the Gremio Lusitano Club. He gave countless hours towards many notable traditions and events, such as the annual Sueca card playing tournament, weekly BINGO, and dinner parties honoring the Beirões and Sporting celebrations. As many know, he is one of the proudest local ‘Sportinguista’ fans. Alberto also served as Gremio Lusitano President, and will be remembered for his success in uniting many through his diplomacy and compassion.
In all of his accomplishments, his proudest was his love for his family and friends. Alberto leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Laura, his daughter Elizabeth, ‘favorite’ son-in-law, Joe, and grandsons Lukas and Cameron Salvador. During the last eight years, Alberto received tremendous care and compassion from the beloved Tina (Fernandes) Dinis, NP, for which we are forever grateful. She will forever hold the title of ‘Cara Linda’. Alberto also leaves his sister-in-law Mabel Santos, sister-in-law Lourdes, brother-in-law Jose Diniz, brother-in-law Jose Carlos, and sister-in-law Conceicao Pedrosa. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren, especially the beloved Dinis/z and Pederneira clan. Alberto will be welcomed home by his daughter Maria, brother Alipio, and sister Laura, who passed before him. We are grateful to the past and present staff of Vero/Wingate of Hampden, who shared and supported our caregiving and love for Alberto.
Visiting hours for Alberto will be held on Saturday, June 5th from 8:45-10:15am in Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery.
It would be Alberto’s wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Our Lady of Fatima Church for the Chapel Renovation project c/o: Festa Preservation Fund or to the Gremio Lusitano Club, so we may keep our Portuguese heritage thriving for years to come.
