Obituary for Maria Leonor Gomes
Maria Leonor (Costa) Gomes, 88, of Ludlow died peacefully on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Foz Do Arelho,, Portugal, daughter of the late Eduardo da Costa and Maria Ventura, Maria was a longtime Ludlow resident where she was a faithful communicant of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Church and currently of St. Elizabeth Parish. She loved gardening and crocheting; but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her loving family; especially her grandchildren. Maria was the beloved wife of the late Jose Eugenio Gomes, who predeceased her in 2015; a loving mother to Jose “Joe” Gomes and wife Rosa, and Maria G. Costa and husband Joaquim “Jack”; a cherished grandmother to Katelynn Mazzola, Stephanie Fernandes, and Emily Anne Costa; an adoring great-grandmother to Brook E. Mazzola, Joseph Mazzola, Lucia Fernandes, and Emily Mazzola; a dear sister to Maria Amelia Horta, Mario da Costa; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends both here and in Portugal. Maria’s family wishes to extend their appreciation to the nurses and staff at Vero in Wilbraham especially her aides Karen, Jennifer, and Sarah, and special thanks to her favorite nurse George. Funeral services for Maria were held privately by her family, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St Jude’s Children's Hospital (stjude.org) or Shriners Hospital for Children 516 Carew St. Springfield, Ma 01104
