Obituary for Phyllis (Egan) Casagrande

Phyllis Ann Casagrande (Egan), 88, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 27, at her home in Ludlow. Phyllis was born on September 25, 1935 to Thomas J. Egan and Helen C. Egan (Dinneen) in Springfield, MA. After spending her early childhood in North Adams and Pittsfield, the family moved to Springfield, MA. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953 and went on to study music at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. After graduating in 1957 with a degree in Fine Arts, she was employed as a music teacher in the Chicopee Public Schools. In 1958, she married Louis A. Casagrande, who had just been discharged from the U.S. Army. They were happily married for the rest of her life. They had four children: Thomas L. Casagrande of Arlington, VA., Louis A. Casagrande Jr. of West Hartford. CT., Kathleen A. Serafino, and Daniel A. Casagrande, both of Ludlow. Phyllis was an accomplished pianist, a skilled cook, an animal lover, and an avid Boston sports fan. She enjoyed watching the Red Sox and especially her beloved Boston Bruins with her husband Lou. In summers, she enjoyed the family vacations to Crescent Beach in Mattapoisett, MA., a place she had been visiting since she was a little girl. Very, proud of her Irish heritage, she enjoyed listening to Irish songs and ballads. Mostly, Phyllis loved the time with her family, particularly the large family gatherings and Sunday dinners. Phyllis was an active member of the St. Mary of the Assumption church community, and a frequent volunteer for the many Ludlow clubs, teams, and activities of her children. Once her young children were grown, she returned to the classroom as a teacher’s aid at East. St. School in Ludlow. Phyllis will be remembered for her sense of humor, wit, intelligence, and flawless grammar. But most of all she will be remembered as a loving, compassionate, and empathetic wife, mother, and grandmother. Phyllis was predeceased by her brothers John T. Egan and Paul D. Egan. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lou, her four children, her sons/daughters in law Elizabeth Casagrande, Susan Casagrande, Peter Serafino, Deb Casagrande, and Mike Palatino; her ten grandchildren Rebecca and Emma Casagrande, Katy, Joe, and Megan Casagrande, Sean, Matt, and Molly Palatino, and Abbey and Patrick Casagrande. A celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held on Wednesday, September 4, at Ludlow Funeral Home, 432 East St., Ludlow, MA, with visiting hours from 10am-11:45am. Phyllis’ family will then hold a private prayer service with Monsignor Gosselin at noon. Family and friends are invited to gather for a luncheon reception at 12:30pm, at Tony and Penny’s, 18 Canterbury St., Ludlow MA. All are welcome. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Compassus Hospice: Janice, Sara, Katie, Marilyn, Gerry, and Hope. The family also wishes to express its profound thanks to the kindness of her home health aide Connie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Phyllis’ memory to: Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive. Tampa, FL 33607.
