Obituary for Lawrence Genander Sr.
Lawrence K. Genander Sr., 92, of the Indian Orchard section of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Born in Oxford, Ma., he was the son of the late Max and Jennie (Russell) Genander. Lawrence obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Fitchburg State Teachers College in Education and Industrial Arts. He taught mechanical drawing and machine shop in Jewett City, CT., Stonington CT. and East Greenwich RI., and also taught Junior High School in the Springfield School System until he retired in 1981. During his tenure as a teacher, Larry was an athletic instructor coaching baseball, football and basketball. He enjoyed gardening, golf, bowling but most of all fishing, especially fishing the Cape Cod Canal, where he set a personal record of a 52 pound striped bass. Larry served his country honorably during WWII in the United States Army obtaining the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Ribbon, he also was a proud member of the American Legion Post 277 and the Knights of Columbus Indian Orchard Chapter. He leaves his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Beatrice (Johnson) Genander; loving sons Lawrence K. Genander Jr. and his wife Carol of Sagamore, MA., Robert N. Genander and his wife Cathleen of Bolivia, NC., and his loving daughter Jean Zola of Westfield; cherished grandchildren Jeffrey, Darlene, Dawna, Jennifer, Steven and Bethany as well as his great-granddaughters Caitlin, Ashleigh and Aleesha. Funeral services for Lawrence will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated in Christ The King Church at 10:00am followed by burial with Military Honors in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will precede the mass from 8:15-9:15am.
