Obituary for Matthew F. Thompson
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Thompson on Sunday, July 11, 2010  at 1:00pm at the First Congregational Church of Ludlow 859 Center St. Ludlow, Ma. 01056.

Matthew F. Thompson, 79, of Miller Street in Ludlow, was called to Heaven on June 10, 2010.  Born in Ludlow on April 21, 1931, son of the late Thomas Kibbe and Dorothy (Burno) Thompson, he was a lifelong resident of Ludlow and a graduate of Springfield Trade School.  Matt had a lifelong career as a salesman and always joked he could sell icecubes to Eskimos.  Sales was his passion. He liked to help people get the best bang for their buck, and he loved a good deal.  After a 31 year career in the tire business, his health forced him to retire, but not for long. He found a new calling as a grounds keeper at Westover Golf Course, followed by a much loved sales position at Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Springfield. At age 75, he was awarded “Salesman of the Year”, and he was planning to work this weekend. He will be missed by his co-workers and especially by his old friend Freddy at Lowe‘s.  He was an accomplished handyman and all of his children benefited from his excellent workmanship in one remodeling project or another. In his spare time, Matt loved to watch old movies, especially Westerns.  Matt found his greatest joy is spending time with his grandchildren and he loved carving the turkey at big family dinners. His gift of gab, quick wit, and devilish smile were long admired. The world will be a darker place without his spark.  Matt is survived by his wife of 58 years, Edith (Ellison) Thompson of Ludlow; his four children: Matthew R. Thompson and his wife Donna of Ludlow, Mark F. Thompson and his wife Helga of Ware, David F. Thompson of Belchertown, and Janet O’Neil (Thompson) and her husband Patrick of Ludlow; his 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren: Rebecca Cheria (Thompson), her husband John, and their children Emma and Sofia; Michael Thompson; Shannon O’Neil (all of Ludlow); Lauren O’Neil of Chicopee; and Chelsea, Kelly, and his special buddy Nathan Thompson of Belchertown. He also leaves his sisters Dorothy Pereira and Peggy DeSellier, both of Indian Orchard, his brothers Thomas of Sandwich, Stuart of Longmeadow, Donald of Vermont, and Gary of Indian Orchard, his sister-in-law Elsie Hiersche of Ludlow, and an extended family of cousins, nephews, and nieces. It was Matt’s wish that there be no funeral services. A memorial service in First Congregational Church of Ludlow will be held later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association 20 Speen St. Framingham, Ma. 01701 - 4688 (Americanheart.org) and the First Congregational Church in Ludlow 859 Center St. Ludlow, Ma. 01056.
