Obituary for Mario G. Campora
Mario Campora, 82, of Ludlow, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 19, at Mercy Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Ludlow, Mario was born on August 16, 1924 to the late Ercole and Adelina (Alves) Campora. Mario was educated in the Ludlow School System and served as a forward aerial photographer/gunner in the United States Air Force during World War II. While serving his country, Mario flew 52 combat missions in the South Pacific and earned the Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with seven bronze stars, and the Air medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war, Mario worked briefly in Leominster, his future wife’s hometown, then reopened a rundown closed up service station on East Street where he operated Campora’s Mobil Service for 38 years. Mario was predeceased by his wife Marie (Casacca) Campora whom he wed on September 13, 1947. Mario was a founder and communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Ludlow where he served as usher/collector at the 8:30 a.m. mass on Sundays. Mario was very active in the Ludlow community as Corporator of Ludlow Savings Bank and Ludlow Boys and Girls Club. He was also a member of the American Legion for over 50 years, a member of the Italian Social Club, the Unity Club, and a charter member of the UNICO organization. He was predeceased by his son John in 1956. Mario leaves his son Mario E. Campora, and his wife Donna, of Belchertown; his daughter Donna (Campora) Steiner, and her husband Gary, of Springhill, Florida; his daughter Cynthia Campora of Ludlow and his daughter Anne (Campora) McCarthy, and her fiancée Larry of Ludlow and son-in-law Steven McCarthy, of Ludlow. Mario also leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren: Deborah Hughes and her children Danielle, and Jake, Dyana and Michael LaRoche and their children Kohl, Luke, and Izabel, Gary Steiner and his fiancée Kim Mosio, Joshua Campora and his wife Susana, Angie Campora, her son Jayden and fiancée John, Mario A. Campora Jr., Kara Campora, Lindsay (McCarthy) Pires, and her husband Michael, and Stephanie McCarthy. Mario leaves three sisters: Casemeda Mariani and her husband Raymond, Mary Panek, and Theresa Marsili. Finally, Mario leaves his “gang” from McDonalds and his St. Mary’s Family. Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 10am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Ludlow, at 11 a.m., followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Indian Orchard. Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 25, 2007, from 4-8pm at the Ludlow Funeral Home, East St., Ludlow.
