Obituary for Anthony Santos
Anthony “Moosey” Santos, 75, of Ludlow passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on May 16, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Ludlow, the son of the late Joaquin and Augusta (Fonseca) Santos, he was a lifelong resident and a 1950 graduate of Ludlow High School. He loved sports and in high school played basketball, soccer and especially excelled in football earning an All Western Mass title. Anthony was a U.S. Navy Veteran from 1950-54 serving his country honorably during the Korean War. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the Aviation Structural Service Medal and was honorably discharged as an Aviation Structural Mechanic Airman in 1954. In 1957, he enlisted in the Massachusetts Air National Guard and worked from 1957–1991 as an Aircraft Hydraulics System Technician with the 104th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield. In 1961, he was activated for a period of 1 year during the National Emergency for the Berlin Crisis and was stationed in Phalsbourg, France. Anthony received many letters of commendation and appreciation for his outstanding performance including the United States of America Meritorious Service Medal upon his retirement and honorable discharge in 1991. In addition to Anthony’s love of his country, he was especially dedicated to his family and enjoyed his time spent with them and with his many pets. He was also a member of the Westover Consolidated Open Mess, Air National Guard Alumni Association at Barnes and the Lusitano Alumni and Fans. Anthony leaves his devoted wife Janis M. (Johnston) Santos; his children Mark Santos and his wife Alice and Jeffrey Santos, all of Ludlow, and Kim Santos of FL.; a daughter-in-law Kathy Santos of Chicopee; his cherished grandchildren Michael Santos and Amanda Brothers of Enfield, Amy and Amanda Santos of Ludlow and Victoria, Elizabeth and Charlotte Santos of Chicopee; his siblings Carlos Santos of Ludlow and Dorothy Cornelison of FL; was predeceased by a sister Emma Fregeau and also leaves several nieces, nephews loving family members and friends. Funeral services with military honors are on Saturday morning at 9am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. John the Baptist Church at 10am followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8pm and donations may be made in Tony’s memory to MSPCA for the benefit of the Angell Memorial Hospital, 171 Union St. Springfield, Ma. 01105.
